SW USA 2024: The Canadian Coddiwomplers*

*Coddiwomple: “to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination."

Back to Canada

We are very fortunate in our retirement.  As a former employee of the Ontario government I retired with very good benefits that also apply to Jerry.  One of the benefits is an out-of-country medical plan that covers you for 90 days.  Since we planned to be out of Canada for more than 90 days, we needed to return to Canada and restart the 90 day period.

We did investigate purchasing “top up” travel insurance before we left but because of our age, it was really expensive and because of my health issues, the insurance companies would not necessarily approve me.  A complicated application was requested.  I also looked at airfare from Dallas to Toronto and compared it to Dallas to Detroit.  The international fare was triple the amount for the domestic flight.

In January, I found a reasonable flight to Detroit and booked on Delta Airlines through Flight Hub.  Never having booked airfare on line with an unknown company, I was nervous, to say the least.  Amie assured me that there was no problem Flight Hub was legit.

Dark and early on Wednesday we made our way to the Dallas Airport – our flight left around 5:45 a.m.  During our time at the KOA before the rally, we made a trial run to the airport and scouted out the parking there.  We were able to book parking on-line, it was so easy!  Anyway, I’m glad we made the trial run because we did get lost then and in the dark everything looked different.  Everything went so smoothly and because I had asked for assistance we sailed through the security right to the departure lounge – our assistant knew where we were going, we did not.

Jerry’s cousin, Al Daminato, very kindly met us in Detroit and drove us to Windsor, Canada.  We purchased a few items and had lunch at the Harbour House right by the river to prove we were in Canada on April 10, 2024.  We then went to see Al’s lovely home in the Detroit area and had a great visit with him before he took us back to the airport.

Dinner was Chick-fil-A at the airport.  It was pretty good.  I have delighted in the many Chick-fil-A billboards we have seen on our travels.  It is usually a cow painting a badly spelled sign encouraging you to eat “chikin.”

Aren't these dairy cows ...

I think we were back in the trailer with Misty around midnight.  A long day.

Our next destination was a little town, Seabrook, TX, on the coast. We’d heard about this place on a YouTube video from a full-time couple who produce their “Today is Someday” videos.  They described Seabrook as a quaint little town with biking trails and lots of pelican statues.  We decided that would be a great place to spend a few days.  More about Seabrook in our next blog.

Take care all.

Love from,

Jerry, Elizabeth, Misty, FJ (Flat Jesus), the Guys, Miss Adventure Too and Clifford the Big Red Truck
